GHR Band Family Tailgate
GHR Band Family Tailgate/ Potluck!! Join other GHR band families to celebrate the start of the marching band season before the first home HSHS football game - Friday, September 6th against Fuquay-Varina. This is a great opportunity for new band families to meet each other, and have someone to sit with at the football game. See the link to visit the SUG to sign up to bring something. Any help setting up and tearing down would be appreciated, so that we can all get into the stadium when the kids march in. See you there!!
We have two awesome events planned to help meet our fundraising goal and we need both parent/family and student participation.
Cornhole Tournament - Saturday, September 7th @12pm at Carolina Brewing Company.
Please see the attached flyer and share it, sign up, and invite some friends! A SignUp Genius will be shared soon, as help will be needed the day of the event. If you have questions or are interested contact Craig Hallacher: hshs_pnc@yahoo.com.
Calling all bakers!!! We are collecting baked goods to sell at the Cornhole Tournament! Please have items packaged and ready to sell. Items can be grouped and packaged however you like, but keep in mind that we want to sell to individuals and they should be easy to take and go. Drop off arrangements should be made with Jill or Janet the week of September 2 and no later than September 6. Thank you!
Tag Day is an opportunity for the HSHS Band Program to reach out into the community and beyond to ask for support for our award winning programs. We'll be setting up tables/tents in various locations throughout Holly Springs on September 21st, supplemented by an online donation portal which makes it easy for our supporters, neighbors, and alumni to contribute. Students will be asked to work shifts on the day of the event, along with parents to chaperone at each location.
This is an inaugural event for the HSHS Band Program and we hope that it will become a main fundraiser that will reach into the community for support for years to come! We will continue to share more information and needs over the next several weeks.
We are working hard on organizing several fundraisers over the next few months. This will include a raffle running throughout the football season, and we’re planning to include a gift card basket as one of the prizes.
To make this possible, we’ll be reaching out to local businesses for donations and purchasing some gift cards ourselves. While we’re not asking parents to go out and buy gift cards to contribute, we wanted to extend the invitation: if you have any unused gift cards that you’d like to donate or if you know of any businesses willing to support our program, we’d greatly appreciate it. Please let us know!
Please contact us at hshsbandfundraising@gmail.com with any business suggestions or questions. Any gift card donations can be placed in an envelope labeled “Raffle Gift Card” and dropped into the band box.
Thanks! Shannon & Chris (Fundraising VP's)

Communication -
This was included in last week's newsletter; however, we had several members late this week to rehearsals.
Knowing in advance if a member will be missing helps with the planning of rehearsals and performances for our staff. If a member will be late or missing any portion of a rehearsal/performance, the band director is to be contacted. It is not acceptable to only let an instructor or student leader know. Moving forward, these will be considered unexcused if communication with Mr. Biasi has not occurred. Mr. B may be contacted by Remind, email, or by calling the band number. During camp, remind or phone is preferred. Thank you for your cooperation.

Upcoming Community Opportunities
Unfortunately, several college band days coincide with camps or competitions. However, UNC is an option. Keep in mind this is our Tag Day also. Prospective music majors should consider attending the ECU Music Student for a Day in September. Lastly, if you are interested in performing with other local musicians in a jazz or orchestra setting, consider joining the Triangle Youth Philharmonic. Marching members, please schedule auditions that do not conflict with our game next Saturday.
Statements were sent out on August 5th and the August payment of $330 is now due. If you did not receive a statement or have questions, please contact hshsbandtreasurer@gmail.com

Communication
As a reminder, camp, rehearsals, and performances are not optional activities. All of our members count on everyone attending so we can be as successful as possible. There is NO second string in marching band.
Please remember that student jobs and drivers ed are considered unexcused absences. I realize a few vacations and other appointments were scheduled before band camp or rescheduled out of your control. Of course, illnesses and other family emergencies are unavoidable, however communication is still expected.

*This is NOT an optional event. Conflicts should be communicated with Mr. Biasi in advance. For those of you who are new to our area, the stadium is home for NCFC and the NC Courage. A cool environment and ranks favorably with the college stadiums we will perform in later this season.
*This is a Saturday Game. Kick-off will be at 5 PM. We anticipate entering the stadium between 4-430 PM. Currently the plan is for the members to meet on-site that day. Attire will be communicated soon, however we will not wear costumes for this performance.

Welcome to the 2024 Holly Springs Golden Hawks Regiment! As of today, we are 91 members strong!
It's here! Our 19th Band Camp begins on Monday with our Pre-Camp rehearsals. There are several pieces of information included in this newsletter to assist you. Please pay careful attention to the information in this link (excerpts from our handbook) It contains items needed for band camp as well as volunteers, etc. Camp Items/Info I know it's a lot, however, one of the reasons we are having Pre-Camp next week is to ease every section into the preparation and expectations for the season, which hopefully will make the weeks in August and the season ahead that much smoother.
Please double-check all marching band dates are on your family calendar and gather items needed for band camp.
Please remember that ALL rehearsals during band camp areMANDATORY! Any conflicts should have already been communicated to the director.
All of our music this year has been electronically shared. Movement One went out on Slack, and now that we have a special dedicated page on the website, the rest of the music will be accessed there soon. Eventually, we will also include our drill. I will share the password with the students. Members will have to use their WCPSS email address to access. Students are responsible for printing their parts at home or bringing a tablet for music rehearsals.
There will be a Q+A Session for parents on July 30 from 7-8 PM in the media center for anything you may need more clarification about marching band. This is highly recommended for our new families.
Optional Q&A Parent Session: Tuesday July 30th, 7-8pm at HSHS
Members of our Band Boosters will be at the school to answer any questions you might have about band, financial payments, opportunities to get involved, fundraising, or anything you can think of! This is OPTIONAL and informal!
Financial Platform Changes - Money Minder
To better suit the growth and complexities of the Band Booster finances, we are moving to a new financial platform: Money Minder. A separate communication with detailed information will be sent to all families with information about statements, payment options, and so forth.

Our Feb 10th AIA Winter Showcase is quickly approaching! We expect to have 60 guard and percussion units attending - our biggest show yet. We will need over 200 volunteers for everything to run smoothly, and we're hoping you will set aside some time to support the HSHS Band Program by volunteering and cheering on our teams! Guard will be competing first, followed by percussion. We're hoping that Percussion families can volunteer during Guard performances, and vice versa.
Last year we utilized around 200 volunteer positions to make the show happen, and this year we have an additional 11 units attending. Translation:WE NEED YOU!!Please please review the Volunteer SUG here and consider signing up for 1 (or more) slots.
Thank you!
*Set-up from 6:00am - 9:00 am: Assist with set-up where needed including the gym, aux gym, judges area, volunteer area, concessions, and vendor tables.
*Tear-down/Clean-up from 9:00pm - 11:00pm (approximate): Tear down and clean up all areas of the show once complete (hospitality room, volunteer lounge, warm up areas, etc). Some areas may break down earlier than others, such as the warm up rooms.
*Parking: Parking attendants will be outside directing the buses, trucks and trailers to their designated parking areas. We will have three stations setup with pop-up tents for shelter.
*Unit Check-in: Greet the units as they arrive at the school. Hand out unit packets and assign student guides. Answer questions and help direct units to the right areas.
*Adult Unit Guide: You will assist Unit Check-in and oversee the Student Guides. You will keep track of the Student Guide schedule and make sure each group has the help they need.
*Student Guides: You will work in pairs. You will be assigned to a unit during check-in, show them where to get ready, walk them through warm ups and direct them out of the gym after performance. Will need to attend training.
*Ticket sales: Greet our guests with a smile & hello/welcome. Assist with ticket purchases, wrist bands, and programs. Answer questions from guests.
*Door volunteers: Assist with spectator and performer entrances. Check for wristbands, open and close doors between performances.
*Equipment and props: Assist teams with unloading and moving props from the parking lot, through the school to the staging area, and back to parking after performing.
*Warm-up stations: Responsible for setting time limits in the warm up room, warning teams of minutes remaining and keeping on schedule as teams rotate.
*Hospitality Room: greet coaches and judges, maintain clean tables and check trash, restock any food items or drinks.
*Concession stand: Sell food and drinks. Keep the area stocked
*Flowers and Candy: Sell "Shout-out" flowers and candy throughout the day. This job would include running the iPad for sales, handling cash transactions, and placing shout-outs in the correct bags for each school.
*Volunteer Table: Check in volunteers, give name badges, direct them to the correct area, oversee the volunteer lounge to make sure it's stocked and clean and collect name badges from volunteers as they are done.
It takes a lot of volunteers to run the AIA Winter Show, and we thank you in advance for your assistance! Please review the available slots below and click on the button to sign up.
The AIA Winter showcase performance schedule can be found here.
*NOTE* This competition schedule is tentative and times may change. If they do, the Volunteer SUG will be adjusted as well. Please check back before the event to ensure you have the correct time.
Please note most spots are listed as "ADULT" or "STUDENT." Adults can sign up in a student spot, but students cannot sign up for an adult position. If neither are noted, the spot can be filled by either an adult or a student.
**If you are a NHS, Tri-M, Key Club, Theater Honor Society, or Student Council member and want to record your VOLUNTEER HOURS, please put your organization (for example: "NHS") in the comments when you sign up. Additionally, there will be a sign-in sheet at the volunteer table when you arrive to the event.**

Winter Band Concert Music Dedication Sponsorship
In preparation for Winter Concert, family members have the opportunity to dedicate a piece in honor of your child, a family member, or the program in general. These dollars will go into the music purchase fund for further selections.
For those of you who were able to attend the winter parent meeting for color guard and indoor percussion last night, thank you. For those of you who were unable to make it, here is a recap. We cannot stress enough how grateful we are to have your student(s) be a part of the HSHS Band Program. We are equally grateful to have such supportive families! Here is the 2024 Golden Hawks Indoor Season Parent Meeting Slide Deck from last evening.
We were able to fill a few of the open AIA Committee Chair positions (THANK YOU!) but still have a couple that remain unfilled. The individuals who filled this role last year is still around and are willing to provide information/guidance:
Publicity - this position shares the show information to the community via fliers, social media, press releases, etc.
Please let us know if you are willing to fill the position or know someone who would be interested. Also, if you are interested in co-chairing a committee, please let us know.
Some of you asked for the Calendar Fair Share Template. Feel free to save a copy, modify, and send out to friends and family to help offset fair share costs.
A couple of reminders:
Please ensure you are up to date on CutTime payments, as it is critical for us to be able to pay the bills for these programs.
If you were not at the meeting, please be sure to connect with your guard (Jill Sawyer) or indoor percussion (Joshua Higgin) parent coordinator. Copies of the required1713aand1713bforms are attached.
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to myself, Paul Alvarez, or your student's instructors.
Golden Hawks Winter Showcase AIA Show Publicity Committee Chair

Happy Thanksgiving to our Band Family,
I am honored and extremely thankful to be your director. We have a great thing going here that doesn't happen everywhere. Our students, parents, and additional staff work hard to maintain excellence throughout our program and I'm very thankful for that. We had an amazing fall, and I'm excited to present our parades and concerts over the next few weeks.
This is the time of year when I often receive interest from parents looking for holiday gift ideas to help their kids further their development as musicians. I've linked some suggestions - Holiday Wish List It's a long list, so feel free to pick and choose what applies for your child. There are options ranging from smaller stocking-stuffer types of items to instrument upgrades!
If you are considering purchasing a new instrument for your child, please consider going to theUpgrade Your Soundevent (presented by Music & Arts) at the Crossroads Shopping Center in Cary on Saturday, December 2nd. The event runs from 10 AM to 5 PM and you can RSVP a time slot to meet with a salesperson to help you navigate the many options. Music & Arts hosts this event once a year just before the winter holidays. They rent a large retail space separate from their Cary store and bring in a TON of instrument inventory beyond what they usually carry day to day. There will be a wide range of flutes, clarinets, alto saxes, trumpets, etc. from a variety of manufacturers, quality, and price points. They also offer special financial and deals to help get a better instrument into your kids' hands.
Private lessonsare another way to assist your child who's willing to make a regular time commitment and practice. I strongly encourage you to view private lessons as a way to get better playing your instrument, to help trouble-shoot a specific problem with playing technique (embouchure, range, articulation, etc.), or to help prepare a music college audition. An updated list is provided here Several students have started lessons recently, and it is making a difference.
Parades
Catch the marching band in the Apex Parade next Saturday at 5 PM. We are the 9th band this year. Arrival time at the school is 2:30 PM. We will leave by 3:30 PM. If you are being picked up in Apex, please fill out theattached formand return by next Thursday.
The Holly Springs Parade is on December 9 at 10 AM. Our luncheon this year will start at 3 PM as our theater program has a play on the same day.
Winter Concert
Our Winter Concert will take place on Friday, December 15 at 7 PM. The price of admission is 3 cans of unexpired food and no glass items. We support the school food drive and your generosity is appreciated. In addition to this, families have the opportunity to sponsor one or more of our selections. A google form is here. This is a perfect way to offset the costs of the video production by Pablo Vega (located on our performing arts network) and leave a lasting legacy. This is due on December 4.
All-District Band and All-Region Jazz Ensemble
All-District Band and All-Region Jazz Ensemble Intent and $ is due to Mr. B by Friday, December 1.
The cost is $10 per instrument for All-District and $15 per instrument for Jazz. Late registration will NOT be accepted.
This is ALL you have to do. Please DO NOT register with the district yourself. Mr. B registers everyone as a school AND we send one check to the district.

Monday, November 13th and Tuesday, November 14th, during band class
DETAILS
We are finally ready to get our Concert Band and Wind Ensemble attire completed. To prepare for the fittings next week, we need each student to fill out aGoogle Form with their options. Everyone must fill out the form, even if you don't need any new items. Please try on last year's clothing before completing the form.
We have updated our selections this year and are now offering a few more items to choose from. You can mix and match pieces so you are comfortable with your clothing during performances. Most pieces can be worn in both Concert Band and Wind Ensemble as you move between bands. There are also options to provide your own clothing. Returning members may choose to wear their items from last year, or they may choose to purchase new items. All of the details are on the Google Form, so read through it carefully.
Students should fill out this form with their parents/guardians. Discuss the options, the prices, and what works best for you.The deadline to fill this out is Friday, November 10th.We will be organizing the responses and preparing for fittings over the weekend, so we need everyone to get this done on time.
If you have questions, contact any of the following individuals:
During fittings, parent volunteers will be pulling students out of band class and taking their measurements. We may have some pieces to try on, but most will need measurements so we can order the correct size. To make the process easier, students should bring tops that are not too baggy or thick. Sweatshirts, sweaters, jackets, etc., will not work to get accurate measurements. If you are uncomfortable with having your measurements taken, send a message to Amy Cook. She can give you directions on how to take correct measurements so you can do it at home.
We need a lot of parent volunteers to help with the fittings during class next week. We have created a signup genius, so sign up for as many shifts as you are available. The only skill you need is to read and write down measurements. If you have a flexible measuring tape, bring it with you. We will have extras.

PLAYOFF GAMES
*When we have home games the marching band expects to perform their show at halftime. In the playoffs, if we win, we keep playing. The band's responsibilities are as follows: Home game - Full Band performs. Away game - depends on location. Decisions will be made in regard to a full ensemble/band and participation depending on travel distance and team we're playing. It is the expectation that Friday's are reserved for playoff game performances as was communicated at the beginning of the season.
The above was communicated last week. I've had to make the difficult decision to change to a band in the stands for this game due to the numerous conflicts that were shared within the past few days. Simply, the production would not work without these members. Home playoff games may be relatively new for our school, however, are even more important than regular season games to our school community.

Several have asked about attending Band Day's at the local universities. A reminder that our mini-camp conflicts with the NC State Band Day this year. Sorry, however, we scheduled on the 16th to avoid the Homecoming Dance and our first competition is on September 30. All are expected to attend the entire mini-camp. NC State Band Day will not be a valid excuse. There are other band days in our area that I would encourage members to attend if interested.

To the parents and students of the Holly Springs High School Golden Hawks Regiment
Dear Golden Hawks Community,
We concluded another highly successful second week of band camp yesterday. We left the field with our first two movements of our production completed. Very soon, we will have our third movement on the field. It is a very exciting place to be in a short amount of time. We can’t wait to share it with you a week from today in our first public performance. The staff and I are so incredibly proud of how our members have interacted and pushed each other so far this season. Our student leadership has done an amazing job preparing activities to strengthen our bonds and it is working. A highlight of the week was the Savage Drum Circle. An administrator shared with me that each member said thank you when coming through the meal line. He was not used to that. Inside my head, I said “YES”, this ensemble is molding itself in the way we envisioned. Thank you for buying into the process.
Costume Fitting for Winds and Percussion
Mrs. Cook is planning to fit wind and percussion students on August 18 before our first game. See below for more information.
Band Spirit Wear Store
Our first ever Band Spirit Wear Store is available on our website. Please remember there is a discounted rate if you order items prior to August 14. We are offering several new items this year. Thank you to Mrs. Whitehead for setting this up for us. Show shirts for the students have arrived and will be distributed next week.
Communication
Thank you for communicating about upcoming rehearsal or performance conflicts. Knowing in advance if a member will be missing helps with the planning of rehearsals and performances for our staff. Also, please remember that if a member will be late or missing practice that hasn’t been previously communicated, the expectation is that they let their captain, instructor, and myself know. We had several instances this past week, where this protocol was not followed. Please improve on this moving forward. They may contact me either through Remind or by calling the band number and leaving a voice message.
Attire for First two Games - Aug. 18/25
For our first two games, our winds and percussion members will wear their show shirts, khaki shorts, black belt, white or black socks, and clean sneakers (doesn’t matter the color). Guard will wear black athletic type shorts. This weekend would be a great opportunity to obtain your shorts. Wind players will also need flip folders for stand tunes. Please check with our librarians or hornline captain before purchasing. We have PLENTY of used ones that may work out just fine.
Football Game #1.
Friday, August 18 is our first public performance. We will perform at the Garner v.s. Holly Springs game. Arrival time to prepare for the game is 5 PM. Our pre-game performance takes place approximately at 6:45 PM. The game begins at 7 PM and our halftime production will be performed close to 8 PM. We encourage our band fans to sit next to the band and cheer us on. It is always difficult to predict the ending time of a game, however, we usually finish around 9:30. Meals are provided to the band students during the third quarter. Students are reminded to bring a refillable water bottle to the game.
Band Camp Week 3.
We have two more camp days (T and W) from 8-4, before starting our evening rehearsals on Th. (5:30-8:30 PM). Meals will not be provided next week. Please bring lunch. Continue to stay hydrated and catch up on your rest. An exciting week is ahead.

Dear Golden Hawks Community,
We concluded a highly successful first week of band camp yesterday. Coupled with fantastic weather and a strong work ethic from our members, we made incredible progress in three days. Our first movement is on the field with music and formations. Our guard and winds have learned movement two and along with our percussion will put this on the field next week. Our student leadership team ran several bonding activities, and three of our sections did a great job cleaning up the cafeteria after our meals. Thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Olds for providing us our meals, and the many parents who assisted us this week.
Costume Fitting for Winds and Percussion
Mrs. Cook is planning to fit wind and percussion students on August 18 before our first game. More information will be coming directly from her.

Our first ever Band Spirit Wear Store is available on our website. Please remember there is a discounted rate if you order items prior to August 14. We are offering several new items this year. Thank you to Mrs. Whitehead for setting this up for us.
Communication
Thank you for communicating about upcoming rehearsal or performance conflicts. I realize a few vacations and other appointments were scheduled before band camp or rescheduled out of your control. Please remember that student jobs and drivers ed are considered unexcused absences. A few instances were unavoidable this week as schedules changed, however, please remember this moving throughout the fall season. Knowing in advance if a member will be missing helps with the planning of rehearsals and performances for our staff. Also, please remember that if a member will be late or missing practice that hasn’t been previously communicated, the expectation is that they let their captain, instructor, and myself know. They may contact me either through Remind or by calling the band number and leaving a voice message.

Football Games, Playoff Games, Competitions, and Attendance.
All home varsity and playoff games are considered important performances and are treated just like a competition. Members are expected to attend the entire game. Please also remember to include at least the first two Friday’s in November for playoff football games. We won’t know for sure if or where our team will be in the playoffs until late October, however, our team has qualified frequently in recent years. Last season, we hosted the first two rounds. Our #1 responsibility is to support our team and school community. If the team is on the road, I will update you with our plans depending on location. If you have any questions about this, please contact me.
Midnight Madness
Our percussion section will represent us tonight at the Midnight Madness event. They will arrive between 10:45-11:00 PM, and head to the stadium around 11:15. The event begins at 11:45, with gates opening at 11:30. All are invited to wear their purple and join in the fun in our band section. We look forward to lots of fun tonight!
Big Loud and Live 18
One reason we end camp at 4 PM on Thursday, August 10, is to allow the opportunity to watch the DCI World Championship Prelims live at local theaters. Many seats are still available at North Hills and Brier Creek Regal. Nothing better than watching this on the big screen and the event can be a big inspiration for our young marchers. Consider taking your family. More info. can be found here -DCI 2023
Second Week of Band Camp
After taking a few days off, we will regroup on Monday, August 7, for our second week of camp. Rehearsals will take place from 8-8:30 PM Monday-Wednesday. Thursday, we will end at 4 PM. We will work mainly outdoors prior to lunch and after dinner (both provided). Please make sure that all attending eat a healthy breakfast (stay away from dairy and orange juice), stay hydrated, and come to camp with hats, sunglasses, sunscreen and deet-free bug spray. Also remember comfortable athletic shoes, and a ½ gallon filled water jug. These are optional; however, neck fans and camel packs are permitted on the field if a member wishes to purchase one. After a cool week, it will be warmer. Be prepared!

We are collecting donations of food, drinks, fruit, dessert and paper products for band camp. If you're able to contribute, please sign up here. Instructions on where to drop off donations are included on the sign up sheet.
We need to make 90 flags for our color guard. We have the fabric, it just needs to be cut and sewn, this is a very simple but time consuming project. We would love to have any volunteers available, meet at school on Wednesday, August 9, from 6-8:30pm. If you can, please bring your sewing machine with dark thread, fabric scissors, an iron and ironing board, straight pins, and yard sticks. This is a job anyone with even the most basic sewing skills can help with, or if you can't sew (like me), please consider joining to help measure, cut or iron! Please contact Jill or Melissa if you are interested in helping and as always, reach out with any questions. Thank you!

We had a fantastic pre-camp this week. Our members learned the first movement of our production and worked on our practice field thanks to the efforts of our operations crew, student leaders, and Mr. Alvarez, Mr. Bordelon, Mr. Rammalaere, Mr. Potts, and Mrs. Worth. Thank you also to our parents who volunteered this week. It was nice to see some familiar faces and learn some new ones.
After taking a few days off, we will regroup on August 1, as we open camp. Rehearsals will take place from 8-6 PM Tuesday-Thursday. We will work mainly outdoors prior to lunch.
Parents, we will have a Question-and-Answer sessionas it relates to band camp and performances at 5 PM in the media center on Tuesday evening. This is a drop-in casual opportunity and is available until 6 when camp ends. We are still working on specific details for our trip to Virginia. That information will be shared at a later time.
To kickoff the BEST band season yet we are offering a discounted rate on all Spirit Wear until August 14th.
Marching Band member students will receive their show shirt as part of their marcher package. Please feel free to order any additional shirts for friends and family.
PLEASE ORDER YOUR SPIRIT WEAR TODAY! DON’T WAIT!
For your convenience, any orders placed between now and August 14th will be delivered to the school.
Welcome to the 2023 Holly Springs Golden Hawks Regiment! As of today, we are 93 members strong!
It's here! Our 18th Band Camp begins on Monday with our Pre-Camp rehearsals.
Please double-check all marchingband dates are on your family calendar, gather items needed for band camp and learn how to get going with the Cut Time information system. Please reach out tohshsbandtreasurer@gmail.com if you need assistance. Most if not all of you should already be in the system.
Please remember thatALLrehearsals during band camp areMANDATORY!
There will be a Q+A Session for parents on August 1 from 5-6 PM for anything you may need more clarification about marching band. This is highly recommended for our new families.
The second fair share payment of $250 is due August 1st. Everyone should have paid a total of $450 at that time. If you have questions about payments or CutTime, contact our Treasurers athshsbandtreasurer@gmail.com

SOCIAL COMMITTEE HELP NEEDED
We need a few more volunteers to serve on the social committee for this year. The social committee plans the Marching Band End of Season luncheon and the Band End of Year Banquet at a minimum. The student leaders are very involved in these events and do a lot of the work, the committee will just handle the catering and assist the students where necessary.
Other events the social committee has done in the past include the family football tailgate, adult-only end of season marching band party and Friends and Family Winter Showcase. The social committee is a great way to get involved, without making a huge time commitment. There is currently one person on the social committee and the former chair is available for assistance. Please reach out to the co-Presidents at goldenhawksbandhshs@gmail.com if you are interested in joining the social committee.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED - GUARD CAMP
Parent volunteers are needed to care for the health and safety of the members during June guard camp. There is a first aid bag that needs to be with you and the members. It's very simple and usually a band aid is needed here or there, but also our kids are spinning weapons and flags and do get bumped in the head and may need an ice pack. In addition to providing first aid, you get a sneak peak at what they're working on! Summer camps are fun to volunteer at because you're really able to see how far they've come once competition season starts. They truly are an amazing group of very talented kids! The practices are split into 2 hour shifts. This seemed to work well last year, but feel free to sign up for more than one slot if you'd like to volunteer for the full 4 hours. Sign up to volunteerhere.

We are very excited to announce that Amy and Matt Savage will be joining our band staff family as co-directors of our percussion program. We hope to have more activities outside of the band schedule next school year for students to get involved in.

CONCERT WEAR CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS
It's the end of the year, and many of your concert wear outfits may need a good cleaning before storing for next year. Here are some instructions, but please check labels as needed.
Wind Ensemble Dress - Machine wash cold; hang to dry.
Wind Ensemble Jacket/Pants - Machine wash cold; hang to dry.
Wind Ensemble Shirt - Remove cufflinks and button studs. Machine wash warm, no bleach; tumble dry; warm iron.
Concert Band Top - Dry clean only
Concert Band Skirt - Machine wash cold; hang to dry.
If you will not be returning to band next year and wish to donate your concert wear, please wash it, bring it to school, and give it to Mr. Biasi. If you haven't heard yet, our Varsity Guard had an incredible week in Ohio. Thank you to all of the staff, students, and administration that were a part of our send off or welcome back celebrations.
Eight years after attending our first Regional as a novice class unit, Holly Springs is a World Championship Finalist.
At the beginning of the year, our goal was to make Semi-Finals. This was our first time attending the World Championships.
It is really hard to describe the energy that was felt in that venue, but I can tell you it was INCREDIBLE. You forgot it was still a competition. It was a celebration. The crowd was huge, and everyone was on their feet cheering when we entered. As you will witness in the video in the re-cap section below, the crowd cheered for us, and erupted when we finished with a standing ovation.
The HSHS Band Boosters is offering 3 scholarships this year. All graduating seniors in the band, including Guard, are encouraged toapply onlinefor these 3 scholarships. These scholarships recognize a student’s service, leadership, and/or desire to major in music.
TheHSHS Band Music Scholarship, specifically designated for students who intend to study music as a major ($500).
TheLuther Johnsons Band Scholarship, designated for leadership recognition ($500).
TheLaurie Morrison Service Scholarship, designated for service recognition ($500).
Please note only graduating seniors qualify for these scholarships. The application period will close at the end of the day on Friday, April 21, 2023.The selected winners will be announced at the Senior Awards assembly.
To put in perspective what our students accomplished,132 schools from across the country were seeded, 124 schools attended the World Championships.
Thursday, in the preliminary round, half of those groups (62) performed either at Northern Kentucky or Wright State Universities. There were 12 rounds of about 10 units. The top two of each round and 56 overall, advanced to semi-finals. We scored a 92, and were ranked 3rd from the NK site, and 1st in our round.
Friday, in the semi-final round, all 56 groups performed at Wright State, for the right to advance to the final round of 20. Again, we scored a 92, which placed us 7th overall and 2nd in our round. This was at 12 noon. Folks were already congratulating us, and yes we knew we had advanced, however, we wanted to see where we'd actually end up after all the rounds finished at 5:30pm.
WELL, twelve of the 20 groups scored a 90 or above, and we were 7th.By virtue of finishing in the top 20, we earned the opportunity to perform at the University of Dayton. Dayton Arena is the same venue the NCAA uses for their First Four round of the men's basketball tournament.
The end result - a 93.1 score and 6th place SA unit in the WORLD!
As a reminder, please do not share the video on social media platforms (including YouTube) for copyright reasons.
2023-2024 BOARD HELP NEEDED
We have many people interested in board and committee spots for next year, but have an urgent need for a Treasurer or Co-Treasurers.
We need help. Our booster treasurers have been on the board for several years each and need to step down. We really need to find a replacement for next year. It really is better as a two person job. If you have any interest, please reach out to one of the Debbies: debbiewysocki@msn.com or deb.z@me.com. If you have any experience with accounting or bookkeeping, we need your expertise. But, you don't need experience, we can teach you. It is very rewarding being on the board. You get to know the other board members and you get to know your kid's friends better too. Please consider joining the board or a committee next year!

Thank you to all of the students, parents, and our chaperones -Mrs. Billingsley, Mrs. Haney, Mrs. Lanaro, and Mrs. Olds - for making the MPA experience possible this year. Both ensembles received Excellent overall ratings consisting of A's and many B+'s from our adjudicators.Though a long streak of Superior's ended, the ensembles are still Superior in my mind. I am so PROUD of their progress over the past six weeks. A special shout-out to Ms. Hinkle, who made her MPA conducting debut. We were a little less polished and it was a tough panel that awarded less Superiors on the first day than the following two. That sometimes happens, though the comments are fantastic and will be very educational and inspiring when the students get a chance to hear them after Spring Break. We'll start a new streak next year. :)
Congratulations to Brett, Aidan, and Carsonwho gave a fantastic concert with the Triangle Youth Brass Bands.
All audition material for 2023-2024 is postedhere. Auditions will begin on April 18.
The next newsletter will go out in two weeks after the Gold guard performance at the WGI World Championships!
Enjoy Spring Break with your friends and family. It has been a very busy 3rd quarter and it is a great time to recharge the batteries for the home stretch.

We had a great turnout last evening for our curriculum night. I have created a HSHS Band Folder 2023 that contains information to assist with course registrations for next year, which will begin in a few weeks. Recommendations will be located in Power Schools and students will also receive this from counselors. The calendar will be updated several times before the end of the year; however a general idea of marching band camp timeline and football games is available. Students may begin filling out the band information form. The folder also contains a sample four-year plan that includes all of the required courses, band and potential GPAs earned. Please notice that all show a weighted GPA over a 4.4.
A reminder that there is no school on Monday. Our guards will still rehearse at the normal time.
Lil Hawks, Jr Hawks and IP are at Apex Friendship tomorrow, please come out and support them! Information and the schedule can be foundhere.
What if someone wants to donate, but they do not own a business? They can donate as Friends & Family!
How does this help my student's fair share?20% of any new sponsor of $250 or more goes directly to your fair share.
Can a business donate services or goods? Absolutely!
Is there a timeframe for sponsors to sign up? NO! Sponsors can partner with us any time of the year.
If you have any leads, but do not feel comfortable reaching out, please email hshsbandfundraising@gmail.comand we will make the connection.

Our All-District Band representatives gave an awesome concert at Green Level HS last weekend (photo below).
Our Golden Hawks Winter Showcase has arrived. A reminder that this event has moved to Middle Creek HS, however, it is still OUR show! In this newsletter you will find a link and information on how you can help. As of today, many spots are already filled! Thank you so much to our GHWS committee, parents, members, and friends of NHS, Tri-M, and Key Club for helping to pull this off.
Tomorrow, ourPurple and Gold guards debut their seasonat Cleveland HS. The schedule can be found here. Please consider supporting them.
I'm so excited to see all of our indoor ensembles perform at our winter showcase next week. I've been able to see portions of everyone's rehearsals, and the shows are really cool, and the performers have worked hard. It's going to be a great day for the Hawks.
Our Virtual Open House takes place on Thursday. You can find the link to the Google Meet in this newsletter.
Holly Springs High School is hosting the AIA Golden Hawks Winter Showcase on Saturday, February 11.

VOLUNTEER!
We need a lot of volunteers to make this a great event, both from parents and students. If you are able to volunteer for more than one slot to cover a longer shift that would be great but we are so thankful for anything you are able to do. This is a great way for students to earn service hours. Please sign up to volunteer here.
There are descriptions listed for each slot but please reach out to Teresa or Jill atghrvolunteers@gmail.comif you have any questions or need more clarification.
Since this event benefits the entire band program, all band students are expected to volunteer. All indoor ensemble performers are expected to be at the event all day and their coaches will send out specific schedules next week. Performers only need to sign up on the sign-up sheet if they need Mr. B to sign off on volunteer hours. They can reach out to Teresa or Jill if they need assistance finding a shift that will work for them.

Holly Springs High School is hosting the AIA Golden Hawks Winter Showcase on Saturday, February 11.As of today, there are 44 units registered to attend, so this will be a big event for our school!
Please share theflyerwith your friends, neighbors and family, as we would love to have a large attendance for this event.
We do not have the schedule yet for the event yet, but when it is available, we will be sending out a sign-up genius for volunteers. We will need A LOT of volunteers for this event! Since this event benefits our entire band program, all band students will be expected to volunteer, and it a great way for students to get service hours as well.
More information can be foundhere, and the web site will be updated as details are finalized.
